Auto Loans Vehicle Custody PLease Help!!

My girlfreind is in a sticky situation and we need some advice please....About 2 1/2 to three years ago her boyfreind at the time brought home a truck for her that he put down $2,000 for ( she did not ask for the truck and she did not know he was going to do that so she accepted). He said it was a gift as long as she made the payments which she has done for 29 months totaling around $12,000. Now that they are not together anymore he is asking for the truck back and will not reimburse her for the $12, 000 that she has put into it... The car was purchased and financed in his name due to the fact he had messed up her credit in the passed and she could not get a car of her own...He is saying if it goes to court that he would present a case stating that she had to pay to use the car which we can understand...But we feel at least half of the money ($6,000) should be given to her in return for the truck so she can purchase a new vehicle on her own... PLease help with any advice!!
