Lots of mess here actually but my initial question for now is, "Can a small (approx. 3 inch wide) single edged axe with a broken handle constitute justifiable reason to conduct a forced search of a mini-van with windows all around?" Driver admitted to having a legal and properly stored dismatled shotgun in the vehicle and explained he is a farm worker where his primary duty is to hunt or deter pest animals such as groundhogs. He was orignally stopped because of a rolling through a stop sign a block from home.

Absolute! Just frustrated as our lawyer AND the farm owner are out of town for the holiday. They did find a couple also legally transported and stored hand guns. (Same reason in vehicle.) All of these guns are old and could be considered almost antiques (they have been used for pest control for nearly 80 years now). They listed the axe and hand guns in the papers but the shotgun has simply gone off the radar so to speak. The registration and insurance papers have also gone missing as well as cash from my son's wallet. By the way, should they have simply taken his license and cash from it and tossed it back in the van? They also never told him what he was being arrested for , nor given Miranda. He didn't get the traffic ticket till several hours later. No processing inventory was done.
