Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen that has been working in the USA for 4 years on a TN. I am planning to marry my US citizen girlfriend and had a couple of questions.

1. Can I legally work in the US under my TN until I get my green card?

2. How long does it take to get the green card?

3. Will I have to stop working at any point in the process of switching from my TN to Green Card status?

Thank you so much in advance!! My main concern is that I have to make sure I can keep my job through all of this!! Thanks!! Just want to make sure I can provide for her!!

Normally you can work under TN until that authorization runs out or you apply for a change of status. Once you apply for legal permanent residency based on your marriage to a citizen (for the "Green Card") you also apply for "employment authorization." Therefore, if you observe the time limits, you should be able to continually work.

It usually takes about 1-2 years to get the green card.
