Terminated Auto Insurance

I was recently involved in a car accident. When I called the insurance company to report it they said that my policy had been terminated. The payment was received late but they cashed the check so I assumed I was covered because they accepted the money. I never received any notice regarding my policy being terminated until I called to make a claim. Can they legally do this? Any legal opinion/advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You'd have to read the contract, to know.

You can make a complaint to the state insurance regulator.

The state will know if what they did is legal.
