I own a service business in Massachusetts. We sent a technician to a private home at the request of the owner to investigate an equipment problem. The client paid the tech for the services performed at that time but subsequently stopped payment on the check. I've heard that it is illegal to stop payment on a check that is written for services performed. Is it illegal? If so, is it a felony or a misdemeanor? Thanks in advance for your help.

Check with the bad check division of your local prosecutor's office.

In many states, this is a crime.

Thanks for the reply. I've been told it was a felony in our state but I don't like to make rash statements. I'll check locally as you've suggested. Again, thanks.
