If you have been charged with a misdemeanor, and have pled not guilty, is there a certain amount of time within which the trial must be scheduled? For example, say I pled not guilty a year ago to a misdemeanor (more specifically, a violation of the Texas Water Safey Code) and have heard nothing from the court since, what happens? Can they call me up in 3 years and say "Okay, you're going to trial now?" I have pored over the Criminal Code and found nothing on this subject. Surely I'm not the first to encounter this.

You should have "speedy trial" rights which would be implicated by such a delay, along with a possible "due process" violation due to the delay. It's possible to waive your speedy trial rights.
