I am 60 and live in Pennsylvania. I was recently awarded a non-service connected disability pension from the Veterans Administration. When i tried to apply online for Social Security Disability Insurance, I was rejected because i "did not meet the 20 work credits needed in the preceding 10 years before i became disabled " to qualify.
I've earned well above the work credits needed to collect SS retirement when i turn 62.
Is this the law?~ it does not seem right to me. Do i have any grounds to appeal the decision?

I suggest you visit a local social insecurity office.

You could have received your answer in error.

Or, you may have been disallowed for certain bureaucratic reasons that the Feds refuse to make public. Social Insecurity is, after all, a legalized ponzi scam.

No, that's actually the correct answer.

You must have obtained the credits within the prior 10 years in order to get SSDI.

However - you may qualify for SSI (which is not credit-based).
