Car was sold in California, new owners husband drove to Reno, blew up engine and car was impounded, now a notice from a collection agency comes saying over $13,000 is due towards the impound fees and interest.

Are you the previous owner of the car? If so, did you file the Release of Liability with the California DMV (assuming it was registered and sold here)? When did this sale take place?

My guess is that the collections agency is going after whoever they can for whatever they can. You can always tell them to take you to court, but you sold the car X months ago to <insert name of buyer> and filed the appropriate paperwork with the DMV (Assuming you did). If you never filed the release of liability, then you may be on the hook for whatever the tow and impound fees are (and i can't imagine they are anywhere NEAR $13,000).

Did you get a breakdown of what that $13,000 is for?
