My son (he is 17) was contacted by the local police department and advised that a car had been vandalized. The police have requested that we come to the police station to give a written statement. Should we do this without an attorney present?

You should never give a statement to the police. Tell the police you and your son were advised by your attorney to make no statement about this or any other matter. Then hire the boy an attorney, if they persist.

Giving a statement won't help. If they are going to arrest him, they'll do it anyway.
