Hello,

I was recently caught shoplifting $40 worth of merchandise from a popular store. I was detained by LPO inside the store, and they collected all of my information. I paid the civil demand, and recently received a letter saying I had a court date. I still have a month left, and have started trying to get legal consultations from as many sources as possible. However, I still do have a few questions.

If I find through a consultation that an attorney might be able to get me a Diversion program, approximately how much would this cost?

Would you recommend taking shoplifting classes prior to my court hearing, and tellthe judge about it?

Is shoplifting in Nevada an automatic grounds for loss of scholarships?

Would writing a letter to the DA have any benefits?

Thank you for your time, and any additional advice would be appreciated. I'm very remorseful for my actions, and understand what I did was completely wrong and inexcusable. I can't sleep at night, and I'm very embarrassed. However, rather than wallow in self pity, I want to take all the time I have and be as productive as possible.

That will vary by county I would expect total out of pocket cost for fines, classes etc to be less than $1000.00

YES! in fct one RTA user saw his case dismisse donce he showed Judg ehe had taken and completed the NASP course

Is shoplifting in Nevada an automatic grounds for loss of scholarships?
That will depend on the school(s) there is no law that applies here as I understand it

Would writing a letter to the DA have any benefits?
NO!!!!! do not contact DA without consulting an Attorney first

Ok, so I will start doing the class as soon as possible, and will have it done by the time I go to my court date. Thank you for the help there. So I'm sure it still isn't the best option, but what if I go into court, plead guilty, and just show the judge my remorse/disappointment and show him that I already have taken the class? Also, is it worth mentioning that I paid the civil demand? I realize these are unrelated, but I was thinking that it couldnt hurt.

I also realize that pleading guilty is basically irrevocable, but I was just wondering what you think the outcome would be if I did. Is it possible to be offered diversion if I plead guilty, even if i mention it? I'm sure it's at the judge's discretion, but I'm hoping he would have mercy on a first time offender especially if I finished that class already.

I'm sure you have no way of telling exactly how this will all go down, I'm just searching for ideas and estimates so I can prepare myself. Thanks again for your time!

That is a BIG gamble that can carry consequences. I advise against it but its your call

is it worth mentioning that I paid the civil demand?

You can but Civil Demand is unrelated to your criminal case

I'm just searching for ideas and estimates so I can prepare myself.

You were given the best advice already
