I stole $395 worth of merchandise from Macy's. I was caught by Macy's and all the items were returned. I got a civil demand notice requiring that I pay them back $395. Then an officer came and gave me a citation to appear in court. I was being charged with a misdemeanor. I know that what I did was wring and I would never do it again. I don't want to ruin my life with ridiculous petty theft. I was wondering what I could expect in court. This is my first offense of any kind with the law. I've never even gotten a speeding ticket. Would I face jail time for this if it's my first offense? Can I plead personally to the judge for a diversion program since I'm only 18 years old? If I automatically plead guilty will I be able to plead for the diversion program or do I need a public defender/lawyer to do that for me?

YES! you need a Lawyer! Your Lawyer can talk to DA and discuss plea options like Diversion
