I recently received a ticket for shop-lifting. I have court in a few weeks. I have no criminal history. I am in nursing school however and will graduate soon. I was told if I get charged with shop-lifting, it is considered a misdemeanor. Is there anything I can do, to get the charge lowered. I do not want a misdemeanor on my record for when I apply for jobs.

I am a retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. Talk to your Attorney about plea options like ACD or Diversion to protect your record

You need a lawyer. If you can't afford one, ask the court if they will appoint you a public defender. Talk only to your lawyer or public defender - ask about ACD or diversion as suggested above. You might also consider taking an anti shoplifting program/class before your court date. You can do a google search for such websites - one is www.shopliftingprevention.org.

The link Betty provided is excellent choice. They are not for profit group with no allegiances to any group, party etc. I advised a client of mine to take their Anti Shoplifting course and show Judge proof at first court date. He did and Judge was so pleased he dismissed my clients case on the spot. No probation! I cannot say same will happen for you but it can only help. If you have questions or concerns about course let me know as I know their Director and can provide you her email address
