I co-signed a 1 year lease in Jan 2002 with another woman. In June of that year, I moved out because the situation was not working, I contatcted the on site mgr to inform him I was moving and so he could approve a subletter for my half of the apartment. He approved. At the end of the year lease my roommate returned my security deposit and assured me she would remove my name from the lease(she is an attorney, not that it matters).
I just received a notice that she failed to pay three months rent and was evicted in the fall of 2005(over three years since I'd been living there). According to the property mgmt they still have both of us on the lease. (After the year lease, the lessee and lessor have the option to go month to month) The management company says that the onsite manager can't remember what happened. The old roommate is not yet reachable. What can I do to clear myself from this bad credit and debt?
