Hi all, I am posting on behalf of mother who is 78 yrs old and a ear cancer survivor. She lives on her own and is in good health until she had a 6 month ct scan. Her last surgery was in November 2015 for cosmetic reasons to fix her sagging cheek on the affected side. Her main surgery was in the summer of 2010 were they removed the contained cancer and used a graph from her arm to " fill in" the ear. In April 2015 she had a follow up appointment with the cosmetic surgeon and all was good. At that time she scheduled a yearly visit with her ent Doctor as they share the same office area. The ent prescribed a ct scan. I took her to the scan in mid May checked in with the reseptionist and was directed to the next area where mom was fitted with her I'd braclet just like every other time and then we went to the waiting room with others. We waited for what seemed like ever watching people who came in after us be called in. Finally a nurse came into the waiting room and asked if there was a ----------- ------- (moms name). She raised her hand and said right here, the nurse then asked were she had been, mom said sitting here, the nurse then said why haven't you signed in? Mom again raised her hand (with the braclet) and said I did. The nurse took her back and on the way she hollered down the hall and said we need her paper work. Thay put mom on the table on her back, neck in cradle just like before. They started the scan and mom said it ran for about 30 seconds when she heard loud, urgent voices from the other room and the machine stopped a nurse came in and turned her head sideways, bad ear down re started the machine and finished. On the way home she said they re-positioned her an odd way half way through the test. 2 days latter we had her over for dinner and wife noticed her ear packed with cotton balls and band aids. She told us that when she woke up there was fluid and blood on her pillow. We took a look at the area and noticed a large fluid filled blister. The next morning my wife went over to check in and call her ent for an appointment. Moms whole side of her face was beet red and swelling, there was also a small match stick sized hole, blood and fluid. Her ent appt. was the following day. He looked at it and took some biopsy of the fluid and tissue but had no clue what it was. Re packed it and continued with the same routine ever 3 to 5 days for a month and a half. No blood test, no specialists I asked him on the next visit if we should see a wound specialist, he said there was nothing they could do that he couldn't! After a month and a half of this and my mom being told it will take time to heal and we should just wait and meanwhile I am changing her gauze every 12 hours, I told him mom no longer needs his services and that her injury was not healing this way and we have an appt. with a wound specialist. He got very defensive . I feel she was over dosed on the ct scan. At this time she has no taste, has lost some hair on that side, gets headaches, loss of appetite, ringing in her good ear, her eye sight has worsened, her face and neck on the bad side is red and hot to the touch and she continues to bleed and have fluid. So the biopsy came back negative and she is going to see a wound specialist next week. I apologize for the way this post reads. Thanks in advance fore any info. Mike

You can discuss (take medical records with you) with a medical malpractice attorney & get his/her opinion re the possibility of a case.

It is worth a trip to the attorney's office. CT scans come with certain precautions and side effects. Bring all the paperwork you or your mom filled out to the attorney. They will have medical experts who can review the work and determine the extent of any improper handling of your mom during the CT scan.

Understand that medical malpractice suits are very difficult to prove, are time consuming and can be costly. It is more than just finding a doctor who said he would have treated differently. The onus is on you to prove that your doctors care caused severe injury and was wholly outside of acceptable medical practice.

Medical malpractice is beyond the scope of this forum to accurately provide any true guidance other than to say you should seek out a qualified attorney. Good luck.
