Setring up a charitable organization?

Please guide me through the process of setting up a charitable organization. I have a pee wee football team and I need some type of charitable status to get large donations. Would 501C help me? I live in Texas if that helps...

What are you ultimately trying to accomplish? There can be differences between a 501c3 and a state non-profit corporation (which may not qualify for 501c3 status if memory serves correct.)
