My wife daughter and myself reside in Rochester N.Y. We recently received a letter from our tax man of many years, stating that he has decided to retire this year (2007). His letter also stated that he sold his business to another tax service. In doing so, he further informed us that he already transfered our tax files to this new tax business. He did mention that we were not obligated to use this new service but it does places us in a precarious situation, knowing that someone else has our financial records. This was done without our permission. Futhermore, we have NEVER signed any document giving our authorization to sell our records.

Is it legal to sell our personal financial information, including our Social Security No's, to another tax service ? Do we have any legal recourse?

Ask him for all YOUR files back immediately, if not sooner.
