My uncle has passed away and named both my grandmother and I as a beneficiary of his union pension benefits. Within 5 days of my uncle's passing, my grandmother passed. There was a trust she had in place an names my mother as the executor and trustee of the estate. Although my mother was not named by my uncle (her brother) as a designated beneficiary. The attorney representing my grandmothers trust stated that te benefits should be paid to my mother under my grandmother's trust. How is this possible ifI have been named the secondary beneficiary of his benefits thru his union following the primary beneficiary designee being my grandmother?

It is possible because your grandmother was alive when your uncle died. Her share of his pension is part of her estate that your mother is executor over.
Had your grandmother died before your uncle then you would have been the sole beneficiary.
