Poked with a pencil

Our thirteen year old son poked a classmate with his pencil yesterday and the other childs father has pressed class A misdemeanor charges against him. What should we do and what are his probable punishments that a judge will fine him with? Are we allowed to ask for a public defender to represent him in the juvenile court system? State of Texas, Williamson County
