Please help with employment issue

Long story short. I have been offered a new position and given an email confirmation letter with start date for a new company. I gave notice of over 2 weeks to my present company. Now my present company has been in contact with my new company telling them I must stay 5 weeks, so dont allow me to start on the already agreed upon start date. Can this be done?

So what? If new company wants you to start then leave current one. Its not illegal to leave without two week notice. The exception would be in you have an employment contract
