Petty theft-shoplifting

I was caught for act of shoplifting at a retail store today, this is the first offense.It was a stupid act and I am highly ashamed of it. I have been given a ticket to appear in the court. What should I do? I am scared if this will remain in my records. I am highly educated and was working at a reputed company in my home country, I am on visa. I want to know what should I do to clean my records and affecting this my future. Please help. Thanks in advance!
