I am going on vacation in Paris in early September. I would like to know if it is legal there to carry my ASP baton for self-defense. For those who don't know, an ASP is a collapsible metal billyclub that telescopes out with a flick of the wrist. When closed it is very discreet... but I don't want to wind up in jail if some sharp-eyed Paris cop spots it and it turns out to be illegal! Can anyone give me an answer on the legality of such items in France?

This is probably a category VI weapon under French Firearms, ammunitions and weapons of war law. That would mean you need an import permit ("autorisation d'importation de matériels de guerre - armes et munitions") which you would have to get five copies of and apply with at the customs office before you leave.

Probably it is not worth the effort :)

Thanks for the reply! You're right: probably not worth the effort. I'll settle for carrying a cane with a sturdy metal crook-handle. Presumably that is not illegal! (?)

Probably not, but hey, it's the French, you never know... :)
