I need advice on the steps to take to collect $3700.00 stolen from my husband and I in 1996 by an unlicensed window contractor. Shortly after he cashed our check, he moved out of his business location and canceled his phone. I have found 4 people with his name in the white pages. I have his California driver's license number and his signature on the back of our check. The person who referred us to him either doesn't know where he is or isn't willing to give us any information. Because my husband didn't have a written contract with him, the police were unable to help. At the time he didn't think he needed a contract because the person who referred him was reliable and had done some extensive work for us in our home. I had given up on finding him until recently when I realized that I need that money. Thank you for your help.
