need help!

i went into a store to cash my check, on the way out i found a wallet i picked it up, got on my way(i know i should have turned it in,but my moral judgement, wasnt at its best)i went to another storeand i still had the wallet i found so i threw it in the trash, i didnt mess with any of the contents i just threw it away, now someone saw me pick it up ,and i was contacted, and i told them yes i found a wallet, but i threw it away,they said there was credit cards etc. inside i told them i didnt mess with anything i just threw it away, can i be charged with anything for finding a wallet and not turning it in?
