Personal Bankruptcy Menatlly Ill and Need to go Bankrupt

I'm writing to you today to try to help my friend out that has bi polar disorder. And she also has over 30,000 in debt and lives on ssd and trys to pay the bills every month but at the moment it just got to be too much. Is there any kind of way that she can go bankrupt with out paying so much for a lawyer. Any help will be Greatly Appericated

Mys - Check with the Legal Services office in your area. They do free work for low income people in civil cases, including bankruptcy. The alternative is simply to stop paying, as SSD benefits are not seizable by creditors pursuant to federal law (somewhere in Title 42, I think). As a practical matter, if friend chooses to do nothing, change to a bank never used before.
