My son took my car to a "friend" who is a mechanic working out of his garage at home. He was supposed to get an opinion on what might be wrong with vehicle and a guess of what that might cost. My son came back and said mechanic offered to go ahead and do the repairs. We signed nothing and when repairs were completed, he quotes a price if $380. This was fair, but I stated I could not pay it all at once and had not been prepared to go ahead with the repairs in the first place. I paid $80 immediately then $120 2 weeks later. Now his wife is harassing me and threatening to put a mechanic's lien on my car if not paid by TOMORROW. Can she do this when we only had verbal agreement?? Very unreasonable - and hard to deal with -people. I am a single mom trying to do what I can.

Unless you son is a minor, you appear to have given him the capacity to enter into a contract. Allowing you to reap unjust enrichment would be a bigger issue.
