LL trying to charge me for flood damage

Here's the situation. We bought a house and moved out in November, our lease didn't expire until January. When we left we set the thermostat to the recommended 60 degrees. In December, the furnace quit working (assumably) and the pipes froze, busted and flooded the unit causing $4+k in damages. She has withheld our $1100 deposit and has since sent us an additional $3+k. We had not notified the LL of our move because we had not finished cleaning, replacing broken blinds, filling nail holes, etc.

Can we be held responsible for these damages?

If not how do we get our deposit back?
