What are the best legal avenues, forms or terms used to protect two people with separate assets that want to have a legal partnership but not necessarily be married, in order to protect the assets. For example, losing social security or other income.
We have been together 10 years and have shared expenses. He has more invested and we would want to have something binding that reflects that. Is it just a business agreement?

You might want to get a lawyer involved and/or talk to a financial advisor (someone of that sort) & discuss what you both want to accomplish.

What you are referring to is known as a "cohabitation agreement."

Read the following article that provides the basics:

Cohabitation agreement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then google cohabitation agreement and you'll find a lot of information as well as sample agreements.

Once you have an idea of what they are about and what's in them, you would be wise to have an attorney go over your situation and create the appropriate agreement.

The alternative is NEVER do anything financially jointly.
