I have forwarded a company email to a person outside my company (employed by our subcontractor) who was damaged by that email. The forwarded email was libelous in content and the person in question lost his job because of that email. He is now suing the author of that email (my colleague) for libel.

However, I realize now that I have broken the confidentiality clause of my contract by forwarding a confidential email. How can I defend myself if my company wants to fire me for breach of contract/confidentiality if/when they find out that I leaked the email?

Can I state that I have upheld the law by informing a damaged party that a criminal offense (libel) has been committed against them?

My intention, irrelevant now, was to prevent further damage done to the person who was fired, not to cause a lawsuit...
