Ok, so I was under the impression by CA civ. code 1950.5 that a landlord may only charge up to twice the amount of the regular rent for a move in, unless furnished. So if the regular rent is $1200 then the deposit would be $1200 making the move in cost $2400. However, if it is furnished the landlord may charge up to 3x the rent to move in 1200*3=$3600.
Q: Can they charge an extra deposit for pets? If so where is that in the civ. code?
Q: Can they charge an additional "security" deposit on top of what has been previously stated ie, 1200 (first months rent) + 1200 (last months rent) + 500 (security) = $2700?
Q: If the landlord may only charge up to 2x the amount of rent for the move in then why do I constantly see landlords charging far more than 2x the amount of rent for move in costs?
Q: Can these landlords be reported? And if so, to who?
