Eviction Defense Landlord knew we couldn't afford rent

We are behind 9 thousand in rent and its not that haven't been paying completely we haven't been paying everything at the end of the month. The landlord knew this could have been a problem before asking us to renew the lease which we did . Now he wants to take us to court . What would be our best defense
