Je me sens très français aujourd'hui, mes amis. Ma mère, qu'elle repose dans une paix éternelle, avait une ascendance française. Ma grand-mère maternelle parlait très bien le français. Nos aînés parlaient souvent en français lorsqu'ils voulaient garder des secrets pour les enfants. Ma douce Mamie ne savait pas que ma tante m'avait secrètement appris sa langue maternelle.

Yes, it is. I was passable in basics (speaking) when we lived in Israel, but all I remember now is how to say "Two more beers and more hummus, please!" Mostly the two more beers part.

Hebrew script - Yiddish words and phrases. Says that my parents and grandparents spoke Yiddish to keep secrets from us kids so we never learned it. My grandfather used to tell amazing jokes in Yiddish that were funny when translated but must have been hilarious in Yiddish.

Conversational Yiddish in the US is rare these days but many Yiddish words and phrases have become ingrained in the English language and sound funnier in Yiddish than in their English translations.

Some examples:

Bubkes - Literal definition - Goat or Horse stool. Has come to mean an insultingly small amount.

Kvetch - To complain.

Gonif - A thief or dishonest person.

Hok a Chainik - To prattle on endlessly, nagging or talking nonsense. Original definition "rattle a teakettle." One could say to Redemptionman "Stop hokking me a chainik."

Megillah - A long, long story. Like some of the long posts with no punctuation that we often see here.

Putz - A fool. Original definition - penis.

Shlemiel - Inept and klutzy person.

Shlimazel - Unlucky person.

Shlemiel and Shlimazel made popular by Laverne and Shirley. "Shlemiel, Shlimazel, Hassenpfeffer, Incorporated.' Hassenpheffer is German rabbit stew and probably shouldn't have been included with Yiddish words as rabbit is not a kosher animal. The combination of the three words are memorable. Ironically, neither Laverne DiFazio nor Shirley Feeney were Jewish.

Oy Vey - Oh Woe. Or Oy Vey is Mir - Oh Woe is Me.

My best friend was from a wealthy Jewish family in Northern California.
We met at Ft. Sill in OK.
He was killed in Nam.
He taught me some Hebrew phrases, and to appreciate Jewish cooking.
I even attended Temple with him a couple times, and he attended Christian services with me.

Other than my parents and my spouse, Joe was one of the ten best people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
