Hello. I am 34 years old and I met someone online about a year and a half ago. We have talked for that long and I never even knew her age but we have bonded and she always surprised me how intelligent she was. I figured she was probably about 22 when we met and now she would probably be about 23 or 24. I've seen pictures of her face and stuff and she looks old enough to fit the part so I've never actually asked her before. She is taking college classes too. Only recently did I find out she lives in Texas just like me - and I suggested maybe we could get a cup of coffee at one of the bookstores she likes. That is when she told me she is moving up to Arkansas and the next month she moved up there and we still talk like normal. Finally I offered to drive up there to see her one weekend and catch a movie at the local dollar theater - that is when she finally told me her age because she was worried for me - she is only 16! I must admit, I was extremely shocked and I didn't know what to do. We never talked sexually and never even met or anything so I knew I didn't have to worry about that - but I somewhat fell in love with this girl so I didn't know what to do.
She told me she doesn't want me to come up there and just flat out have sex or anything and I told her I wouldn't even if I could - being with a 16 year old just isn't THAT appealing to me. But she told me she researched it and the age of sexual consent up in Arkansas is 16 so just in case if we did do something. I don't want to have sex with the girl at all right now - I would much rather - if I did keep talking to her - wait until she was at least 18 years old. But I was wondering, if I did meet up with her in Arkansas for a cup of coffee or went out to a movie or something - simply as friends and nothing sexual involved, is that illegal? And could I be persecuted for it?
