illegal foreclosure

We had an illegal foreclosure back in 1996. It was thrown out of court as the judge ruled the lender didn't follow the proper rules . The attorney we had said to wait until they found the error & restarted the foreclosure process again. Throughout the course of 12 years, we have been threatened with various letters of eviction,which amounted to nothing. Is there a statute of limitations on something like this?
