Naturalization, Citizenship Husband Canadian/Father American husband wants dual citizenship

My husband & I have been discussing the possiblity of applying for his dual citizenship. His Father is American. Has lived in the USA most of his life. My husband was born in Canada and resides in Canada. Is it straight forward applying for a dual status? Is my husband automatically entitled to this dual citizenship because his Father is a USA citizen.

Let me just make sure I understand correctly. Your husband was born in Canada and is currently living in Canada. His mother is a Canadian citizen; his father an American one.

Am I right?
 
There is a reason behind why he wants his dual status. We live 1.5 hours from Skagway Alaska. We spend almost every weekend in South East Alaska. We are considering on moving to Haines, Alaska within the next 8 years. Starting a business and semi retiring in Haines, Alaska. We figured by acquiring his dual status that this would allow us to live in Alaska without restrictions.
 
Well, to start with, you can't apply for dual status. You either have it from birth (which I suspect is already true of your husband) or you get it by applying for citizenship of a country that recognizes the concept. The US and Canada both do, albeit with great reluctance on the part of the US. But there is no application for "dual citizenship" per se.

But unless things have changed radically, he is already considered a dual citizen by virtue of his mixed citizenship parentage.

I am a dual citizen by birth. I was born in Canada to an American mother and a Canadian father. I entered the US as a minor under my mother's citizenship, which made it easier. When I turned 18, I contacted the Canadian Consulate and asked about it because I wanted to retain my Canadian citizenship, and yet living in the US I wanted to know about passports and voting and things like that. The Consulate was very helpful; he might try calling the US Consulate where you live. But I truly believe you will find he is already considered a dual national by birth.

Just adding my ten cents worth here.

All the above information is very helpfull and to the point, there is one thing to bere in mind though and that is criminal records. Either country do expect the applicants to be criminal free.... Just a thought? Not that I am insinuating anything, just adding information.

Apart from that i think everything else has been covered.

Excellant. This means alot to Charles & I. I will contact the US Consulate immediately. Once I get all the proper documentaion this will able my husband & I to fish Alaskan King Crab & Alaskan Shrimp. For the past seven years of spending every weekend in Alaska(during the spring & summer) we could have been Shrimping & King Crabbing. Wow! Since Charles will be reconized as US, which the US Port of Skagway Alaska already does, shouldn't this give us the green light for what we want to do for our semi retirement?

Yes, Charles has a minor criminal record from when he was seventeen. Under aged drinking & possesion of a joint. About 3 months ago, a US boarder guard held my husband up for 3 hours, questioned him. and drilled him about who he was. When he eventually discovered my husband was Canadian/American the US guard relased him and said welcome home(referring to the US). My poor husband sweated bullets the whole time.You see we had just purchased an ultimate custom made aluminun boat(190K)..we had finally upgraded to one of our dream boats. For a good three hours he thought we were going to have to put a for sale sign on it. Ever since this incedent at the boarder, the US customs always say "your dual citizenzen" right Mr. Widrig... and we are sent right on through. Thank goodness. My husband & I couldn't imagine life without the Alaskan Ocean....this is why we are looking at retirement in Haines, Alaska.

As this minor incident happened such a long time ago and it is not a crime of moral turpitude, I am sure you will be fine. I for one Love the king crab and shrimp a long with most people, go get them for our dinner plates.
