Very hurt, disappointed, and saddened...looking for some advice.
Long story short, my pre-teen son has a serious mental health d/o and got himself into some legal trouble. He was charged with attempted sexual assault. The parents of the victim have been supportive of us, and know we are getting our son the help he needs. We had no idea he had these issues; we discovered he viewed porn while outside of our home (on the bus with older kids) and without our knowledge. He is going through intensive therapy and court ordered treatment and doing very well. However, at least 4 families in our neighborhood are wanting my son's head on the proverbial chopping block. One neighbor sent out a mass email to the neighborhood telling everyone my son assaulted multiple children. He and another neighbor went on the news and made up stories about my son assaulting their boys. The story stated that he assaulted several neighborhood boys, which didn't happen. They show up in court and write letters full of lies. We intend to move, but due to finances and needing to get our house in order it will take some time. In the meantime, what legal rights do we have? My son is sweet boy with a heart of gold and is paying heavily for his mistakes. How do I protect him? Restraining orders? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your valuable time.

You may not believe the stories being told, but I doubt you can disprove them.
What is important for you to have any meaningful action to take is some kind of damages. Hurt feelings won't get you far.
I suggest you focus on your sons needs and forget about the neighbors.

Agree, just focus on your son until you are able to move.
