Hello, I have a friend who I've let stay in a tent in my back yard for six months. He never paid any rent, never signed a lease or any other legal agreement, and now I want him out. My Questions are:
    1. Am I obligated to present him with a two weeks notice or any other documentation?
    2. Does he have any legal recourse? Should I be worried about him finding a way to stay longer or sue me?

    Thank you for your consideration.

The good news, he's not staying in your home.
You might contact the police and see if what he's doing violates any local ordinances.
If it is, you might be able to have the police instruct him to leave.
Otherwise, you know the deal, written notice (30 days, maybe 60) to vacate, and if he ignores it; off to court for a legal eviction you must go.

There are others who know the intricacies of Cali law, so their answer might before helpful or definitive.

No worries, I'm guessing the cops will appear and tell dude to move on, and that'll end it.

If he's behaving abnormally, threatening you, acting violent, you can get him gone sooner and much quicker.
If he has drugs in his possession, that'll get him gone, too.
This country is falling lower and lower, day by day.
You're not the first person to tell me, or that I have observed on my own, people (or persons) camping on someone's property.
I own a ranch, and one of neighbors (about five miles away), has three families on his property living in camper shells.
They're just down on their luck people, and my neighbor is a very caring guy.
They've lived there for about 18 months.

This is beginning to remind me of "The Grapes of Wrath".

If he's just a harmless, lazy bum, no short cut for you. LOL
