My lease was up a few months back. My property manager informed me of a rent increase. He offered me a new agreement to sign; pay higher rent or move out. -- I was informed of all this 7 hours before the effective date!! I signed a month-to-month agreement, as I had nowhere else to go, but knew I wanted to look somewhere more affordable. I finally found a new place, signed the paper work and picked up the keys last Monday. I gave notice to my current landlord (manager) that I will be moving out by the end of the month, a week away. He argued I am responsible for the entire month of November because I did not give 20 days notice. But I'm "month-to-month" and as I see it, he did not give me a 30-day notice of rent increase, therefore breaking the agreement first, and not leaving me liable. I made some suggestions (like keep my deposit and call it fair) but he threatened lawsuit! Do I have a case? Will he win? What are my rights?!
I can not afford to make 2 payments next month!…
