former landlord suing-dupex leased by now ex husband

Was married when moved into duplex. Husband met landlord,moved in w/her,divorced me. Lease was in his name only I believe, utilities were in his name. I never signed anything like lease or contract. Lease expired 3 months prior to me moving out. She terminated my tenancy. Now she is suing me for non payment, late fees, damages, etc. A single parent, on limited income I did not pay the last month's rent as it was needed to move. I think she's doing it for spite mostly. Have been moved out for 1 month and now she sues. Is there anything I can do? Would a counter suit be possible(I wouldn't have been in the situation if he had not left us for her)? Any advice would be helpful.
