Filing an affidavit

I'm going to traffic court on Monday. I have a sworn affidavit in my defense. I can't find a definitive answer on this according to Michigan court rules (MCR). When is it too late to file an affidavit? Does it have to be a certain time before the formal hearing? Are the rules in a formal hearing different? Does what the affidavit states make a difference?

For anyone who wants to know, I called the court clerk. She said I could file it in a formal hearing, and also told me nobody represented themselves ever in a formal hearing at that court... I found that to be interesting.
