Fighting CA traffic ticket (not speeding!) from CO

I was in CA for business in mid-March (I live in CO) and was cited for throwing a lit cigarette butt from my rental car. I did no such thing - this was in San Mateo county on the 101 freeway, at about 830pm. I got the notice from the court yesterday and the fine is $338.50! As I understand it, to fight it, I have to appear in court, in CA. There's no way I'm going to do that - it would cost me far more in time and effort and $$$ than it would to pay up to avoid the citation on my license.

Am I screwed either way?
