You need to appear in court as directed in the citation. Bring proof of registration and proof of insurance.
The court will determine if you get a break, or will be broken further.

Don't ignore the citation. The citation is also a summons to go to court. It must not be ignored.

Yes, you could still be responsible for the fine. It is possible the court will dismiss the citation when you show proof of correction, but you will likely still have some court costs to pay.
They are going to get your money one way or another. Failure to pay the fine or have the citation otherwise addressed will result in more fines.
