Assault & Battery Domestic Violence

I have been charged in Mississippi for public drunk and domestic violence. I went to city court today and plead not guilty and I am awaiting a date for a hearing or trial before the judge. What can I expect the punishment to be for these charges if found guilty. My girlfriend does not want to pursue the charges but I am told it doesn't matter what she wants to do. The state picks up the charges against me. I just wondered how much time I would have to spend in jail over all this. I stayed 15 hours and she came and bailed me out. Do I need a lawyer for this or do I just need to represent myself. The judge said most people represent themselves in his court since it is a city court. I would really appreciate the help.
