Do I need to divorce my bf to marry him again?

This was my previous question ~ Can we get married again on the same state? After completing divorce to a previous partner?

I married him while he was still married to somebody else.
So he officially got a divorce from his first wife.
We've decided to get married again as my marriage to him before was void.

I was advised to divorce my bf first to marry him again.
Is this correct and necessary?
Can't I just marry him straightaway since my first marriage to him was void?

If you married this person while they were STILL married to another your marriage is likely not valid
