demand letter from corp lawyer

my child shoplifted 11.37 worth of stuff and we recently got a demand letter from the company's lawyer for $250.00 "to save us additional time and expense". I know that they can charge 50 to 500, so should we pay this or should we wait until they take us to court? do we need a lawyer? this was the first time she got caught.

First off they wont take you to court right away. They will raise (triple) fine. Then perhaps raise it again before court. They will also report this to the major credit reporting bureaus. then when you are taken to court they will get the new higher fees plus court costs and legal fees thus making your couple hundred dollar fine into thousands possibly. Save yourself the trouble pay the fees
