deceased father

My father passed away in 1996 and I found out that he left Social Security for me but I can't have it because he is not on my birth certificate how do I go about getting a DNA test from him to prove that he's my father so I can get the Social Security that was left for me?

Please explain a little further re what you mean that he "left" SS for you at his death. Thanks.

As noted, SS is not left for someone upon death. A legitimized minor child can collect it. He is dead so that ship has sailed. Even if you could manage to prove he was in fact your father, you are no longer eligible to file for benefits and they are not retroactive. Other is not a state.

OP does have a US IP address.

OP, please define what you mean by "left" you social security that you apparently just found out about & did someone tell you that you can't have it because he is not on your birth cert.? You most likely are not entitled to any benefits at this time.
Are you possibly disabled? If so, at what age did you become disabled?
Did he possibly leave some of his soc. sec. in a savings account or something for you?
You probably can't get a test on his DNA since he died 1996.

It is possible to test close relatives (as in parents of the deceased, siblings, others suspected to be issue or progeny of the deceased, etc...) of a deceased person against YOUR DNA to determine if the deceased was NOT your father.

Its also very expensive.

Certain TV shows allege they will assist certain people for FREE.

Good luck, detective.

my father was a veteran and he passed away when I was 16and I went to Social Security to check it out and they told me that the money is there I just have to provide sayings that he was my father and get it certified and go back down there but I don't know where to start or how to start again in his DNA

Well, now you're not 16. You are not eligible for those dependent survivor benefits anymore.

Try Maury Povich's website. You can post them or send them an email telling them you need a DNA test to help you identify and prove that "Joe Jones" is your father. Joe passed away in 1996, and you need to see if you can get his brothers, sisters, his mother or father, or one of his other children DNA tested to prove he was your REAL, BIO dad.

Its FREE to try. Good luck.

but he passed away when I was 16 so they owe me back pay because I never received it because he's not on my birth certificate but I am sure once I prove he is my father then I will receive it I just gotta find out how or where to go to get it done]

I tell you what - why don't you call or go to a social security office currently & see what they say before you pursue further for possibly nothing. (& no it's not likely his DNA will be on file anywhere)

I mean won't they have his DNA on file or something that they can use that as a test

In 1995, DNA testing had just entered its infancy. I doubt that his DNA was on file, unless he had been in the military.
Even if he had been, the military didn't begin collecting DNA routinely until near the end of The Gulf War (late 1992, and the efforts were initially limited).
The Feds didn't begin collecting DNA from convicted felons until 2008.
If any DNA testing is to be done, it'll have to be against his close family members.

As far as any retroactive SS bennies, read this:

I'm not sure you understand what you're being told.

You are not owed anything.

First, lets start with how old your sister is. Benefits are not retroactive to death. Being on her birth certificate is not all the documentation the SSA might require.

Are you saying your sister *currently* gets soc. sec. benefits or got them in the past? How old is your sister now & how old was she when she started receiving them? Thanks.

If your mother is still alive, I suggest you sit down with her and have a LONG chat. Mother might have some VERY interesting news to share with you.
