Wife has cancer ,only has a few day's left, If mother passes before petition for adoption is filed. Can I ( stepdad ) get custody or guardianship of child ,who will be 16 years old. I been stepdad since child was 2 years old. Real dad hasn't been part of her life. What can & how can I make sure she stays with me.

If her mother expires before the adoption is formalized, you will have no standing to adopt.

Ask the attorney about motioning the court to expedite matters due your wife's declining health.
