Recently my husband recieved a letter from a company called Trackers, Inc. They stated that Gateway had contacted them to collect almost $1400 in principal from a Gateway he financed in 1998. While he was paying on the Gateway he recieved monthly bills. He paid off the Gateway in 1999 and never recieved another bill afterwards. This company is demanding money that we don't have and believe we don't owe. He hasn't been contacted by Gateway in almost 3 years. It also does not show on his credit report that he financed the Gateway. He swears he paid it off. The company told us we had thirty days to dispute the claim and at that point they would provide proof. We sent them a letter stating the Gateway had been paid off in 1999 and that we wanted the proof. We recieved a letter shortly after saying that we were disputing the claim but never stated why. What can be done about these people?

How was the computer paid for? By check? Credit card? Most likely not by cash via mail. You should be able to retreive statements of checks or credit cards -- if you don't have them already. $1,400 is a lot of money to dispute. Perhaps you should tell your husband that you'll help him collect the information... or tell him that he can tell you if it's possible that he may be "mistaken."
