Credit union lost my check an made me pay for it.

i cashed a check last year in november at my credit union, then a couple of months later they tell me they lost the check an they didnt get credit for the check.. i gave them the number to where i got the check from an worked with them for months to try an get another check back, because the first check didnt clear.. they told me if i didnt get another check to give to them, they would take the money out of my account.. they recently took the money out of my account without my permission? is this legal? they lost the check, not me. why should i have to pay for it?
