Credit Cards, Rating, Repair Credit Repair - outsource or figure it out yourself

I have heard this a lot of different ways but I want to try and solidify this for myself. I've heard that credit repair companies are great but I've also heard that if I dig my heels in, I can figure it out. Is there any advantage (other than saving a little money) to doing either or? Are there any specific times when one would be better than the other?

Many of these credit repair companies are scams. They are run by people who know that clients who come in asking for credit repair are frequently desperate, willing to sign something at the first promise of relief. I would treat them with great caution and do research. You can always ask for information about what they can do for you but I would probably promise myself to sign and agree to nothing until you've had time alone to think it over and consider other options.
