My slum lord says i can't pay my rent with cash .... WTF?

And that's perfectly legal if the lease specifies the form of payment that is acceptable. So take out your lease agreement and see what it says. If you are on a month to month verbal lease, then you are pretty much stuck with paying as the landlord requests for months after the request is first made because if if you don't pay as directed the landlord can terminate your lease in pretty short order.

With a money order or check you have proof of payment. A true slum lord would take your cash, not give you a receipt, then claim you didn't pay and evict you.
